Does Working With a Staffing Agency Make You More Employable?
Staffing agencies have positions they need to fill and the ability to employ candidates very quickly. This is helpful because employers and recruiters may look negatively on extended periods of unemployment. Little to no time between employers is an indicator of a proactive and motivated employee. Some of those employers will then send new employees through trainings or certifications to prepare them for the work they will be doing.
Staffing Agencies have the ability to start candidates in a company that do not hire directly. There are times an agency is the only way to get a foot in the door of a specific company candidates are passionate about. Once an employee is in the door, even on a temporary assignment, it significantly increases their chances of being hired directly by that company.
If an employee is observant they will learn more than just their job functions, they will learn how different supervisors, managers, experts, departments and companies communicate and operate. Exposure to multiple management styles, problem solving techniques and programs can be extremely valuable if applied correctly at a new department or a new employer.
The knowledge and skills you bring to the table make you valuable and YES can give you that opportunity!
How a Little Structure Helped our Small Business BOOM!
Owning a small business is sometimes described as ‘The American Dream.’ But what people often times overlook is that along with the dream comes a fair share of nightmares!
The Beginning – Chaos
In the beginning stages of our business, like any startup, we lacked structure but were fortunate to have owners possessing key traits like: passion, energy and a very strong drive to succeed. Each owner wore multiple hats, interchangeably. One moment you’re trying to land your first client and the next you’re changing light bulbs while the other owner is going from designing a new logo to figuring out how to satisfy the needs of your first client. Owners had to juggle everything, all day, every day and often times all night.
The Employees ≠ Less Chaos
Once we finally brought in some business, the ‘quick fix’ to the chaos was believed to be simple: hire employees! This proved to be easier said than done… Taking your hard-earned money, that cost you blood, sweat, tears and sleepless nights to generate, then hesitantly give a portion of it to someone else in hopes they can ease your burden.
What is sometimes overlooked is; people bring a whole new set of baggage to your party! Yes, it’s nice to have someone help you with the phone calls, the e-mails, the customer service, the sales, etc., but they also come with the challenges of; wages, taxes, benefits, different work ethic, different personalities, etc. So, hiring new employees did allow us to shift some responsibility but in the same breath added more, different, responsibilities to our plate.
Mini-Me’s = More Chaos
When you run a business for several years and you experience the pains of a start-up, then the growing pains of becoming a legitimate business, you finally realize: we’ve created mini-me’s who, like the owners in the beginning, wear multiple hats and interchange them throughout the day.
The new employees were trained to do nearly everything the owners were doing (because that’s the way the owners did it and that’s how they wanted it to be done). New employees we taught a piece of marketing, were encouraged to help sell, were taught customer service and expected to satisfy all the client’s needs, while also helping in some of the HR and finance roles, because again, that was once the owners job which was partially passed down to the new employees.
The Consultants = Structure
Finally, after experiencing so many growing pains, a lightbulb went on when we were introduced to the concept of business consultants. We began meeting and interviewing expert consultants from different firms looking for The One who would help us find a better structure in order for us to establish a foundation for future growth. Growth had come over the years but it came with many growing pains. We believed our new strategy for a better business structure would be the key to quicker, more substantial, growth.
And, as it turns out, we were right!
Structure = Greater Success
In 2012, nearly 17 years since our business began, we partnered with the consulting firm, Petrous Leadership. The result, in a nut-shell: we doubled in size! Through many months of coaching, brainstorming, consulting and white-boarding, we found a structure that was custom-designed for our unique business.
With solid structure finally in our company tree came structure within each of our processes. We designed custom processes to streamline job duties, improved processes and operations, built new interview and screening techniques, all of which helped us find, hire, train and retain top talent who all fit into their structured roles within our newly structured organization.
Having the ‘right people’ in the ‘right roles’ is what it finally took for YES to experience growth on a greater scale, even after many years of business behind us.
End Result = Staffing Perfected
Staffing Perfected is our goal, it’s also our end-result when our structure fires on all cylinders and our team is ‘on fire.’ We’ve reached the goal of becoming more structured and having a clear plan in place for all our staff members and a road map for future growth. What the future hold is still yet to be seen, but come what may, we are ready and structured for success.

The Utah Department of Work Force Services releases data on current jobs and unemployment for the state on a monthly basis. You can watch their most recent video below for a detailed update of the most recent employment data.
The state of Utah currently has a 3.5% unemployment rate ranking below the 4.4% national average.
We’ve also seen a 2.8% job growth (compared to August of 2016) rate last month compared to the 1.5% national growth rate.
“Employers are still adding jobs,” says Carrie Mayne, Chief Economist at the Department of Workforce Services. “The challenge is to ensure that the people coming into the workforce have the skills that are needed by those employers that are posting jobs.”
How Utah Employment Numbers Affect Staffing
Karina Horst, an account manager at our Salt Lake City, Utah staffing office had this to say about the latest job report:
“The best part of my job and what makes me excited to come to work every day is to know that I am helping to improve unemployment and growth in the State of Utah. Also, knowing what areas of employment are growing faster can help us to meet our mission statement that says, ‘Deliver the right people, on time, the first time.’
With that information we can focus on the areas that will expand the most so we can help people to have a long term and stable job.”
Recently I had the opportunity to sell my old house and move. In some ways, it is exciting and fun to look forward to a new adventure, but on the other hand it is stressful and a ton of work. All of a sudden I am thinking about how solid and put together things are or what needs to be fixed at the new house. There seems to be an unending list of things that need to be fixed or “tweaked” a bit to make sure the house is working properly and in good condition. Not only at the new house but also at the one that we were selling. Man, am I glad it is over. Now I just have the next 10 years to unpack and put everything away.
During the beginning stages of the buying of the new home we hired an inspector who goes around the home and highlights all the good and bad, including the areas that show wear and the areas that need to be fixed. The foundation is always checked and focused on. Why? The whole home depends on it. As the foundation goes, so goes the rest of the house.
A Solid Business Foundation
The same principle goes for any business. There has to be a solid foundation for a company to be successful. It is a great idea to occasionally assess a business foundation to make sure you are headed in the right direction and building appropriately. During difficult times, the foundation is something the company can rely on. This is also true during the good times or growth of the company so that it has something solid to build upon.
At Your Employment Solutions, we have four main cornerstones which we have built our company upon.
Cornerstone 1 – Our Business
First, “Our Business.” This includes our mission statement of, “Delivering the right people on time the first time.” The ability to match the employee with the right client ensures success for both the client and the employee.
Cornerstone 2 – Relationships
Second is our “Relationships” with those we work with, both vendors and clients. As our relationships improve we create an environment where we can have open discussions for the improvement of the working relationship. There has to be honest and open communication to be able to maximize the objectives both parties are working towards. It is the only way to really get down to the core of the problem and find a solution.
Cornerstone 3 – Processes and Operations
Third, our “Processes and Operations.” These include the processes we use to properly vet, qualify and place our potential employees with our clients. Each client has their own qualifications to hire an employee. YES has to make sure we appropriately “on-board” our employees for each client by following their requirements.
Cornerstone 4 – Our Team
Finally, “Our Team” – at YES, we try to consistently train/develop our staff and empower each other to do what is right.
Having a solid foundation is key to success in business and in our own homes. A solid foundation gives us confidence and is something we can rely on in the good times and the tough times – it is something to build upon. If a foundation is not done right, or as we move further away from the foundation – mistakes will increase/multiply. The foundation YES is built upon is solid and as we continue to grow our four key cornerstones will help ensure our continued success.
At Your Employment Solutions we know that the staffing business is the people business. YES, we want to help people find good jobs in Utah! Our company mission is to match the right person to the right job every time. That said, we truly appreciate and care about the people we get to work with on a daily basis.
