Aime Lopez, an account manager in our Ogden, Utah staffing office had this to say about the latest job report:

“This information gives us some insight on what industries are currently in the most need and how many people are actually looking for jobs at the moment. I think the Utah job numbers help us at YES to better understand our audience and what kind of potential employees we are going to have walk through the door.

If we stay on top of this we are able to understand why we may be struggling on filling jobs and be educated enough to explain it to our clients as well.”

Claudia Olivares, an account manager at our North Salt Lake, Utah staffing office added this:

“When I hear that the economy in Utah is good and unemployment is low here which is true; a lot of companies have the mentality that it’s going to be harder to find people to work and overall everything is harder because of the competition too, etc. But that’s not necessarily what it means.

Even though unemployment is lower, there are still a lot of people out there looking for work. A lot of job openings and job seeking. I think taking this is as a challenge is a good mentality to have and with that, focusing on better recruitment strategies. There are steps we can take to combat our hiring hurdles, if we focus on our status, recruitment, hiring the right fit to avoid turnover, we should be able to increase the number of applicants interested In our jobs and ultimately fill our open roles.”

Thanks for the input Aime and Claudia!

Utah Job Numbers | March 2018

Most Recent Employment Numbers in Utah

The Utah Department of Work Force Services releases data on current jobs and unemployment for the state on a monthly basis. You can watch their most recent video below for a detailed update of the most recent employment data.

The state of Utah currently has a 3.5% unemployment rate ranking below the 4.1% national average.

We've also seen a 2.9% job growth (compared to January of 2017) rate last month compared to the 1.5% national growth rate.

“Employers are likely struggling to find people to fill the jobs that they would like to fill,” says Carrie Mayne, Chief Economist at the Department of Workforce Services. “And so they're not adding (jobs) at the rate they used to add.”

utah employmentHow Utah Employment Numbers Affect Staffing

Chris Walker, an account manager for one of our Ogden, Utah staffing clients had this to say about the latest job report:

“Strong economic growth shows potential for what’s ahead. However, the obstacle is getting worse with unemployment. It’s positive for those seeking a career change because they have their pick of the bunch, but what does that mean for us as a staffing agency? It means we will have more delay in filling jobs because the people we are getting are usually quitting the job they have to move into a new company.

The best way we can follow through with our mission statement is spend more time with individuals and make sure they understand the job they are going into and qualify for the position as well. That way we take care of our employee and our client. Which will, hopefully, in turn help decrease the turnover we’re experiencing.”

With that information we can focus on the areas that will expand the most so we can help people to have a long term and stable job.”

Cassandra Smith, an account manager at our North Salt Lake, Utah staffing office added this:

“The Struggle is REAL… With the 2017 and 2018 January review being almost identical, this is going to be a tough year for us to find quality candidates and keep them. Good news is the economy will be a steady growth with new jobs in construction and service/hospitality. Bad news, other companies will not see a fast growth like in years past.

We need to come up with other alternatives to keep quality candidates. Work with our clients to find quality and experienced and entry level candidates. We are almost scrapping the bottom of the barrel with 41,300 jobs open and only 49,200 reported employees out of work in the state of Utah. So again, the Struggle is Real…”

Thanks for the input Chris and Cassandra!

“The best part of my job and what makes me excited to come to work every day is to know that I am helping to improve unemployment and growth in the State of Utah. Utah Job Numbers | April 2017

Most Recent Employment Numbers in Utah

The Utah Department of Work Force Services regularly releases current jobs and unemployment numbers for the state. Watch their most recent video below for a detailed update (released in March) of February's employment data.

The state of Utah currently has a 3.1% unemployment rate ranking below the 4.7% national average.

We've also seen a 3.3% job growth rate last month compared to the 1.7% national growth rate.

“Our extremely low unemployment rate shows that we are getting people into jobs and creating a lot of opportunities for jobseekers,” says Carrie Mayne, Chief Economist at the Department of Workforce Services.

utah employmentHow Utah Employment Numbers Affect Staffing

Seth Hopkin, an HR manager who works out of one of our Ogden, Utah staffing offices had this to say about the latest job report.

“When unemployment numbers are so low and so many companies are looking for qualified applicants, job hopping in positions that require technical training, secondary education, or extensive experience is more common.

For YES the low unemployment rate, even though statistics indicate we are in the ‘fastest growing' segment of the economy, may be because it is harder to find the right fit for the positions that are available. I don't know how much of the population is considered unemployable, or how to even define that term, but there are certainly fewer candidates to consider for each open position.

With that said, if it is difficult for YES to find employees, the service we provide becomes for more valuable for the companies we partner with because it is that much more time they don't need to spend looking for the right candidate in a difficult hiring environment.”

Thanks for the input Seth.
