Why Staffing and HR Are One in the Same

How Can We Be a Human Resource or Staffing Support to Your Company?

 utah staffing and hrAccording to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “staff’ is a verb that means ‘to supply with a staff or with workers.”

When you think of a Staffing Agency, what do you think of?

Are you on the staffing client end of the relationship where you are responsible for working with an agency to ensure your production needs are met through a well-trained, reliable workforce? Are you a manager or business owner considering whether to use an agency or not to support your current or upcoming staffing needs? Or are you on the other end of the equation where you’re the applicant using a staffing agency to help you find a job where you can gain experience and be successful? Over here at Your Employment Solutions, we are the common denominator in each of the questions posed here. We call that common denominator ‘Human Resources’ or ‘staffing’; to us, it’s one-in-the-same.

Going back to the dictionary, Merriam-Webster defines Human Resources as “a department within an organization that deals with the people who work for that organization.” With a staffing agency providing workers to their clients, I dare to consider them as the HR Department for companies who otherwise lack one, an HR extension or support center for those who already do have an HR department, and I also consider a staffing agency as an HR Department in and of themselves because they recruit and manage the human capital for themselves, as well as their clients.

The Staffing Human Resources Puzzle

There’s another piece to the puzzle though; if Human Resources are those who ‘deal with the people who work’ at the company, aren’t all supervisors and managers considered part of HR then? I would argue so! It’s not enough to simply hire talented and qualified workers. Companies must invest in them through proper on-boarding procedures, support them through training and development, and offer them compensation and benefits that are fair for the work they provide. Often times if any of these are missing from the equation or aren’t given much effort or attention, companies see an increase in turnover and a struggle to recruit the talent they need.

In a sense, everybody is part of Human Resources, but not everybody is knowledgeable or comfortable with being considered a part of Human Resources. Sometimes we need help.

Working for Your Employment Solutions is Filled With Opportunity

Many people may not know this, but I have experience working with another staffing agency. Since I arrived here at YES I can definitely see the difference from one employment agency to the other.

Overall, I’m grateful that they gave me the opportunity to follow this career. I can’t deny that the difference between YES and any other agencies is that Your Employment Solutions cares about their employees, every one of us is important. We are all treated with respect and for me that’s really important. One of the things that caught my attention is how organized everything is at YES. Everyone has a specific role in every department and that makes it easy to know who to contact if there is ever a problem or a question.

That is one of the things that I have admired since I got here as well as how YES has shown us how to value our co-workers and our employees that we talk to on daily basis. Being a Well-Rounded Recruiter

For me being a well-rounded recruiter is not just filling the job orders we have, but looking for the RIGHT person for the job. It makes the employee feel confident that their skills are being put to good use and the client loves when we find the perfect candidate. It’s also about making sure the employee feels appreciated and respected by giving them a position they would love. When the employee feels appreciated, the more likely they’ll stay at the job we gave them.

I can’t complain, I am able to work in an office where everyone is mature, where you can feel the companionship, the teamwork, and where everyone works towards the same goals. No one is compared to each other so everyone is equal making it easy to find help anywhere. With a new job comes new responsibilities to learn and with that I have to admit that here at YES it has helped me a lot in my professional career.

Does Working With a Staffing Agency Make You More Employable?

Absolutely!

Staffing agencies have positions they need to fill and the ability to employ candidates very quickly. This is helpful because employers and recruiters may look negatively on extended periods of unemployment. Little to no time between employers is an indicator of a proactive and motivated employee. Some of those employers will then send new employees through trainings or certifications to prepare them for the work they will be doing.

There are times an agency is the only way to get a foot in the door of a specific company candidates are passionate about. Structure: The Key to Business Growth

How a Little Structure Helped our Small Business BOOM!

Owning a small business is sometimes described as ‘The American Dream.’ But what people often times overlook is that along with the dream comes a fair share of nightmares!

The Beginning – Chaos

multitask in businessIn the beginning stages of our business, like any startup, we lacked structure but were fortunate to have owners possessing key traits like: passion, energy and a very strong drive to succeed. Each owner wore multiple hats, interchangeably. One moment you’re trying to land your first client and the next you’re changing light bulbs while the other owner is going from designing a new logo to figuring out how to satisfy the needs of your first client. Owners had to juggle everything, all day, every day and often times all night.

The Employees ≠ Less Chaos

Once we finally brought in some business, the ‘quick fix’ to the chaos was believed to be simple: hire employees! This proved to be easier said than done… Taking your hard-earned money, that cost you blood, sweat, tears and sleepless nights to generate, then hesitantly give a portion of it to someone else in hopes they can ease your burden.

What is sometimes overlooked is; people bring a whole new set of baggage to your party! Yes, it’s nice to have someone help you with the phone calls, the e-mails, the customer service, the sales, etc., but they also come with the challenges of; wages, taxes, benefits, different work ethic, different personalities, etc. So, hiring new employees did allow us to shift some responsibility but in the same breath added more, different, responsibilities to our plate.

Mini-Me’s = More Chaos

staffing minionWhen you run a business for several years and you experience the pains of a start-up, then the growing pains of becoming a legitimate business, you finally realize: we’ve created mini-me’s who, like the owners in the beginning, wear multiple hats and interchange them throughout the day.

The new employees were trained to do nearly everything the owners were doing (because that’s the way the owners did it and that’s how they wanted it to be done). New employees we taught a piece of marketing, were encouraged to help sell, were taught customer service and expected to satisfy all the client’s needs, while also helping in some of the HR and finance roles, because again, that was once the owners job which was partially passed down to the new employees.

The Consultants = Structure

Finally, after experiencing so many growing pains, a lightbulb went on when we were introduced to the concept of business consultants. We began meeting and interviewing expert consultants from different firms looking for The One who would help us find a better structure in order for us to establish a foundation for future growth. Growth had come over the years but it came with many growing pains. We believed our new strategy for a better business structure would be the key to quicker, more substantial, growth.

And, as it turns out, we were right!

Structure = Greater Success

staffing structureIn 2012, nearly 17 years since our business began, we partnered with the consulting firm, Petrous Leadership. The result, in a nut-shell: we doubled in size! Through many months of coaching, brainstorming, consulting and white-boarding, we found a structure that was custom-designed for our unique business.

With solid structure finally in our company tree came structure within each of our processes. We designed custom processes to streamline job duties, improved processes and operations, built new interview and screening techniques, all of which helped us find, hire, train and retain top talent who all fit into their structured roles within our newly structured organization.

Having the ‘right people’ in the ‘right roles’ is what it finally took for YES to experience growth on a greater scale, even after many years of business behind us.

Staffing Perfected is our goal, it’s also our end-result when our structure fires on all cylinders and our team is ‘on fire.’ We’ve reached the goal of becoming more structured and having a clear plan in place for all our staff members and a road map for future growth. What the future hold is still yet to be seen, but come what may, we are ready and structured for success.
