At Work You Can Often Expect the Unexpected
Have you ever been in an interview and they ask you, “Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?”
Obviously you answer, “Here, growing with this company.”
That’s the answer you most likely give in hopes that you get the job. Well, this is my story about how I really am “growing” with a great company.
My Journey at Your Employment Solutions
I started working here at Your Employment Solutions (YES) during the summer of 2013. They hired me as the receptionist at their North Salt Lake office, even though I was living in Ogden, Utah in my mother-in-law’s basement. I was barely 23 years old, married for 3 years and in search of our first home.
My first day was a lot to take in! At first I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it, but I was dedicated, I learned everything I thought I needed to know, and also started building friendships with fellow employees.
Unexpected Part I
Things were going great only to find out I was being transferred to the Ogden office. Of course I was excited to be closer to home, but also nervous to be working with a whole new group of people (again).
My first day here in Ogden was…. different.
Everyone was very nice and helpful, but the Ogden and North Salt Lake offices are totally different! New clients to remember, new addresses and phone numbers to give out, remembering pay dates all over again, and getting everyone’s names mixed up. I felt like a wreck!
Unexpected Part II – The Sequel
After being in Ogden for two weeks I received some very exciting and nerve-wracking news…. I was pregnant! I worked up until my scheduled due date and had my baby shortly thereafter in early 2014 — healthy, happy, and adorable!
When the time came for me to return to work I was more than ready.
Unexpected III – Ashton Bounces Back
Well, the day before I was scheduled to start working I received a call from our HR manager saying they were excited to have me back, BUT they needed me in North Salt Lake again!
Honestly, I was disappointed to have that commute to deal with again, but I kept telling myself, “Deal with it, you can handle it.” One nice thing was I given a raise (so that helped with the commute).
I caught on again real quick and was back in my groove. Things were great! But…
Unexpected IV – The Return of the Ogden Recruiter
Two weeks later, BOOM! “Ashton, we have decided we are sending you back to the Ogden office, and you’re getting a promotion and a raise.” That was a great day! (Oh, and we bought a house that day too!).
So, here I am today in the Ogden office, working for an amazing boss and some great fellow employees. Life is good!
The point I wanted to get across in this post is: be patient, work hard, do what you are expected to do, be flexible, be positive, and expect the unexpected, because you WILL get what you deserve, you WILL get noticed, and you WILL get rewarded!
